Youth Suicide on the Rise

Monday, November 9, 2020
2pm – 3:30pm ET

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among teenagers ages 15-19. Alarmingly middle school age suicide  (age 10-14) is also at an all-time high surpassing car crashes as the leading cause of death in this age group. There are many factors that influence youth suicide beyond mental illness and genetic predisposition.  Dr. Hatim Omar, retired founder, and chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Young Parent Program at the University of Kentucky will be joining us to discuss adolescent development issues related to suicide, contributing factors, and prevention strategies for youth suicide.  He will also be discussing the rise of depression during the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on youth.
