Alarmingly middle school age suicide (age 10-14) is also at an all-time high surpassing car crashes as the leading cause of death in this age group. There are many factors that influence youth suicide beyond mental illness and genetic predisposition. Dr. Hatim Omar, retired founder, and chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Young Parent Program at the University of Kentucky will be joining us to discuss adolescent development issues related to suicide, contributing factors, and prevention strategies for youth suicide. He will also be discussing the rise of depression during the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on youth. |

Helen believes it is stories like hers and sadly many others, that hold the power to create change. Helen will graciously remind us of the power we have as parents to help our teens make smart, healthy and safer choices. Participants will learn about the problem and consequences of underage drinking and marijuana use, the role of teens’ friends/peers, the power of parents and adults and what we can do today, tomorrow and in the future to keep our kids safe. |
